    Position Summary and Responsibilities

    Teledyne Scientific Company has an immediate opening at its Thousand Oaks, CA facility for an entry-level Member of Technical Staff–Research Scientist position in the Optics group. The group specializes in developing, prototyping and demonstrating cutting edge technologies in liquid crystal devices, agile beam control, sensors, and imaging as well as non-imaging optical systems.


    Essential duties:

    • Develop device architecture and optimize materials formulations as demanded by specific applications for agile liquid crystal devices (polarization, phase or intensity control using various types of liquid crystal materials)
    • Simulate device or system performance
    • Design, fabricate, integrate, test, and validate prototype devices and systems for new concepts
    • Work with management and technical team to understand customer requirements, support development, implementation, documentation and transition of the optimum solution
    • Collaborate with other researchers to generate new ideas and support research proposals for future funding opportunities
    • Build patent portfolio and publish new findings, as appropriate



    Desired skills, experience, and qualities:

    • Strong experimental background and hands-on laboratory experience in liquid crystal device fabrication and electro-optic testing
    • Experience with diverse fabrication techniques, e.g. surface treatments, bulk doping (polymers/nanoparticles/dies), holographic fabrication etc.
    • Detail oriented and meticulous, ability to efficiently find an optimum path in a solution space with many degrees of freedom
    • Ability to simulate underlying physics using common computer software tools and predict performance at device or system level
    • Basic understanding of peripheral system components common for electro-optic devices, such as drive electronics, mechanics, thermal, and software
    • Excellent technical judgment, data analysis, and interpretation skills
    • Passion for new technology development and creative thinking
    • Versatility and willingness to work outside of the comfort zone
    • Ability to work in a team environment, without day-to-day supervision
    • Interpersonal skills, open communication, work ethics, and discipline



    Recent PhD (or PhD candidates close to thesis submission) in Physics.


    US persons strongly preferred (U.S. citizens, permanent residents, asylees, refugees, and temporary residents. Temporary residence does not include those with non-immigrant work authorization (F, J, H or L visas)
