    Position Summary and Responsibilities

    General Overview

    The Senior Mechanical Engineer researches, plans, and designs underwater mechanical and electromechanical products and systems. This position directs and coordinates activities involved in the fabrication, operation, application, installation and repair of mechanical or electromechanical products and systems. Performs as a lead in major projects and serves as a mentor to other Mechanical Engineers.

    Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Having wide ranging experience, uses professional level concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Networks with key contacts outside own area of expertise.


    Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


    • Preliminary design, including scope estimation to completion/interface with program managers
    • Design simulation/analysis using Solidworks, including Finite Element Analysis, as required
    • Generate Bills of Material, ECO’s and technical documentation
    • Produce design concepts to support sales and marketing
    • Evaluate concepts for engineering validity and complexity
    • Design review preparation, execution, action item tracking and closure
    • Prototype coordination, as required
    • Interface with customers to obtain job-specific knowledge; implement this knowledge into the design
    • Interface with Procurement to ensure delivery commitments are met
    • Interface with Manufacturing Engineering to ensure production procedures fulfill design constructs
    • Take overall ownership of multiple concurrent projects
    • Ensure complex mechanical designs on long-term projects are completed on time and on budget
    • Support validation and manufacture of systems
    • Create customer documentation
    • Provide weekly status reports to Director of Engineered Solutions Group/Engineering Services

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related technical field
    • A minimum of 8 years of experience in mechanical design, including design for manufacture of complex assemblies with cast and machined parts
    • Must be fluent with Solidworks and FEA analysis
    • Experience in designing product for ruggedized/extended environmental requirements, including thermal, pressure, shock/vibe, and corrosive environments
    • Experience using standard measurement tools for mechanical and electrical parameters, such as calipers, micrometers, multi-meters and hand tools
    • Ability to interface efficiently in a cross-functional group in an engineering and production environment
    • Experience with painting and anodizing methods is a plus
    • Experience with root cause analysis and failure analysis is a plus
    • Familiarity with machine shops a plus
    • Solid verbal and written communication skills
    • Strong organizational and multitasking skills
    • Industry knowledge is a plus
    • Requires occasional work in a marine environment on a small boat or larger vessel
    • Ability to work safely around test tanks and electrical current
    • Must have effective written and verbal communication skills at a business level
