    Position Summary and Responsibilities

    Summary Statement:

    Performs assigned duties requiring extensive skills associated with the operation of Manual and CNC lathes, mills, and other machine shop equipment to produce machined parts in support of production and engineering needs.


    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Perform setups and operate manual and CNC lathes and mills.
    • Program CNC machines to produce machined parts that meet requirements.
    • Read and edit programs for CNC machines.
    • Read and interpret drawings, sketches, and documentation related to parts.
    • Take verbal concepts/inputs to produce parts.
    • Produce tight tolerance parts in accordance with drawings, sketches, and documentation using a variety of materials. (including titanium, stainless steel, bronze, and plastics)
    • Closely monitors parts produced to ensure conformance with requirements.
    • Measure parts using height gage, micrometers, calipers, and other measurement tools and equipment.
    • Ensure compliance with Company safety and environmental requirements.
    • Share machining knowledge with lesser experienced employees.
    • Inspect machines and equipment in the department to ensure adequate operational performance and optimum utilization.
    • May assist in seeking opportunities for reducing costs, reducing scrap and rework, and minimizing waste within the department.
    • May assist in the development and documentation of standard operating procedures and work practices for the department.
    • May assist in troubleshooting and repairing department equipment and systems.
    • Perform deburr, painting, and other miscellaneous tasks associated with completing parts production as required.
    • Packs and moves parts as required for additional processing and/or inspection.
    • Perform housekeeping and clean-up tasks as required.
    • Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.


    Education and Experience:

    • 5+ years of CNC machining experience (with proficiency in both Lathes and Mills) producing tight tolerance parts
    • 5+ years manual machining experience (with proficiency in both Lathes and Mills) producing tight tolerance parts
    • 3+ years programming CNC equipment to produce tight tolerance parts


    Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Skilled at reading, interpreting, and understanding drawings, sketches, technical documentation and information.
    • Strong mechanical aptitude.
    • Skilled at tool selection, order of machining operations for efficiency, feed rates, etc.
    • Skilled at using measurement and inspection equipment to verify parts specifications/dimensions.
    • Basic knowledge of machine routine maintenance activities.
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering documentation, technical specifications, and manufacturing documentation and drawings.
    • Ability to comprehend and apply principles of basic math, algebra, geometric tolerancing and basic statistical data.
    • Proven knowledge and skills of safety/environmental measures associated with machining operations.
    • Good English communication skills.
    • Good communication skills to communicate professionally with shop personnel and management.
    • Ability/willingness to develop/coach/train department personnel.
    • Good computer skills and ability to comprehend ERP.

    Physical and Mental Demands:

    • Continuously operate machines that require the loading of materials into the machine, removal of parts from the machine, and entering/editing data in the machine. Frequently position self to perform the aforementioned activities which include moving about the machines, reaching above and below shoulder level to load and unload materials into machines. This position occasionally twists, stoops and bends to perform job duties as well as to push and pull.
    • Must be able to monitor machine operations and perform verifications of the physical attributes of machined parts. This requires close vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
    • Must be able to understand/interpret specifications, drawings, and instructions.
    • Frequently lifts and moves materials to be machined and parts that have been machined (up to 25 pounds). Occasionally lifts and moves items that weigh up to 50 pounds.
    • Ability to research, comprehend and retain job related information and instructions.
    • Ability to understand, offer and implement solutions to machining problems/challenges.
    • Ability to frequently work near moving mechanical parts and equipment.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet requirements.
    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
    • Ability to use inspection and measurement tools in the verification of part dimensions.
    • Occasionally communicates with managers and coworkers in the performance of job duties. Must be able to exchange accurate information and understand instructions and technical details.
    • Ability to read and accurately interpret information/technical details.
    • Occasionally moves about the office to access file cabinets and office equipment.
    • Must be able to maintain a clean and organized work area.

    Work Environment:

    •  Machine Shop – Usually moderate noise level; working near moving parts; electrical and other energy sources; oils and coolants; items with sharp edges.
