    Position Summary and Responsibilities

    General Overview

    Under limited guidance, analyzes specifications, sets-up and operates machine tools to make and repair a sequence of operations, such as fabricating tools, dies, jigs or fixtures. Must have knowledge of design techniques, tools and principles involved in production of precision technical plans and drawings.  Determines methods and procedures on new assignments.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    • Direct new tool model builds and coordinate mold changes and mold tuning
    • Coordinate mold repair with internal team
    • Create or modify programs for CNC equipment in the Machine Shop
    • Interpret part drawings and specifications to create mold and tool designs
    • Coordinate with engineering and production team to resolve design problems regarding material characteristics, tolerances and cost efficiency
    • Design, research, recommend and procure new tooling
    • Train Machine Shop personnel on operation of equipment, mold maintenance, and machine troubleshooting/maintenance
    • Correct problems with poorly performing tools
    • Complete corrective action reports and proper investigation of root-cause
    • Plan and perform diversified machining operations to produce tool, fixture and gauge components necessary for customer specifications
    • Create programs and processes to produce machined parts on CNC machines     
    • Operate CNC machines, mills, lathes, surface grinder, drill press, radial drill, and shaper using standard machining practices
    • Trouble shoot programs, tooling, fixtures, etc. to streamline processes for maximum efficiency
    • Plan operations, select tooling, machine attachments and work holding methods, set spindle speeds, and tool feed rates
    • Assist the production machine operator in performing tool tryouts on new or modified tools
    • Selects, aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools or materials onto machines
    • Manufactures jigs, fixtures, dies, molds, machine tools, cutting tools, gauges, and production tooling used in manufacturing processes
    • Utilizes knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance to perform assignments
    • Identifies and repairs minor machine malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls as required
    • Confers with supervisors, production personnel, programmers, engineers or others to resolve tooling or assembly problems

     

    Supervisory Responsibilities                                                  

    This position has no supervisory responsibilities, however will mentor and provide high level technical training and guidance to employees within the department.

     

    Qualifications

    Qualifications/Requirements

    Education/Experience

      • Requires a high school education, GED or equivalent knowledge gained through formal education, including vocational training
      • Requires a minimum of 5-10 years closely related machine shop and/or tooling experience
      • Requires knowledge of machining practices and techniques, mechanical principles and mathematics, setups, tooling applications and machinability of materials
      • Demonstrated experience using MasterCAM
      • Intermediate computer skills (Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word) needed to perform the required duties
      • Demonstrated ability to use shop mathematics, drawings and measuring tools
      • Experience with Haas controls is desired
      • Background in molding tooling and processes and experience in adhesives, bond preparation, urethane and neoprene is desired
      • Understanding of 5S and Lean Manufacturing is a plus
      • Must possess U.S. citizenship or be a "U.S. Person". (A U.S. Person is defined as a person who is a lawful permanent resident “Green Card holder” as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1101 (a)(20) or who is a ”Protected Individual” as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).)
