Position Summary and Responsibilities

The CNC Machinist – I will plan, lay out, fabricate, and assemble the most complex production machined parts and highly complex prototype research and development machined parts.

Other responsibilities assigned to this position will be to:

  • Set up, program, and operate all types of CNC and manual machine shop and tool room machines and equipment and verify that the center of rotation and the pivot point is correct.
  • Set up and operate independently machine shop machines such as 4, 5 and 6 Axis CNC and manual milling machines, lathes, surface grinders, bench grinders, shapers, planers, horizontal and vertical boring mill, and jig boring machines.
  • Exercise considerable care of equipment, tools, parts, machines, and materials to prevent damage. Interprets blueprints, drawings, route sheets, and other specifications to ascertain nature of assigned work orders.
  • Works from series of drawings which may have section views and which may require computing taper and angle dimensions, pitch, clearance, tolerance, and fit.
  • Determines own work procedure for assigned number of pieces, types of metal, types of machines, tools and attachments, speeds and feeds, tolerances and sequences of operations.
  • Exercises considerable judgment, ingenuity, initiative in the planning, layout and performance of all assignments.
  • Performs quality machining of materials such as Titanium, copper, brass, tool steels, various stainless steels, magnesium, nickel, plastics, epoxy fibers, and other materials as required.
  • Uses precision instruments such as gauge blocks, toolmakers, buttons and taper and bevel gauges, air gauges, comparators, indicators, and micrometers.
  • Assists in estimating or evaluating work as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

 

Requires a high school education or equivalent, plus approximately six (6) years as a lower grade Machinist. Must have at least 5 years experience with 4 axis machines and 3 years experience with 5 or more axis.

 

Other Requirements:

Requires demonstrated ability to perform calculations necessary to determine starting points or set-up of numerically controlled machines.
