Position Summary and Responsibilities

The Mission Operations Engineer will provide support to the Lunar Reconnaissance Mission (LRO) Mission Operations Team (MOT). 

A successful candidate will train for the LRO Operations Engineer position, including the following general duties and responsibilities:

  • Monitor the health and safety of the LRO spacecraft and ground system.
  • Monitor real-time activities and transmit daily loads to LRO.
  • Respond to, identify and investigate spacecraft and ground anomalies.
  • Write and maintain daily operations records – daily blogs, activity requests, engineering changes, etc.
  • Perform daily mission planning activities.
  • Perform daily trending and data analysis activities.
  • Perform verification testing using the LRO Spacecraft Simulator for all off-nominal activities prior to use on the spacecraft.

Nominal support to this position is maintained during day-shift work hours, Monday-Friday, however off-nominal hours support is expected during special operations.

Candidate is expected to certify for operations and expand his/her support role to become the MOT resident expert in a specified spacecraft subsystem and science instrument, with each support phase defined as:

  • Start Date plus six months - Operations certification, including mission planning, trending, and real-time control certifications
  • Start Date plus 18-24 months - Operations Shift Lead certification

Qualifications

Requires a BS degree in a recognized field of engineering, plus approximately two years experience in applicable field.
