Position Summary and Responsibilities

Position Overview:

The Welding Engineer is a highly technical role involving execution of the metal joining process. Overall responsibilities will include process definition, development, qualification and troubleshooting.  This position will performs those activities on a broad spectrum of materials using advanced metal joining technologies including laser, gas tungsten arc, brazing and electron beam welding.

 

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops, generates and maintains records for Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS’s) and written procedures to produce welds to specification and related requirements.
  • Facilitates qualification of WPS’s (PQR’s), and welding equipment and welding operators to ASME, API, NORSOK and AWS Codes.
  • Experience with tensile, hardness and bend testing as well as heat-treating per applicable Codes and ASTM standards.
  • Coordinates off-site EB Welding customer witness and conducts testing activities at a Third-Party Supplier.
  • Provides support and training to manufacturing departments to ensure processes and equipment are available to meet schedules.
  • Provides services to ad hoc metal joining needs for special projects. Executes all responsibilities to assure that processes are safe and compliant to applicable regulations.
  • Executes tasks to identify, develop and implement processes and equipment changes to practice continuous improvement.
  • Assumes ownership of processing equipment to coordinate and assure effective maintenance and repair practices.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver formal and informal presentations on status of key activities by utilizing project management practices and organizational skills.
  • Works with Process Engineering staff to ensure written work directions are generated and available for production technicians.
  • Performs development and analytical tasks in support of improvement and troubleshooting activities.
  • Manages projects to milestones, deliverables, and budgets.
  • Uses Six Sigma and statistical tools and techniques as appropriate to characterize and improve processes.
  • Develops product manufacturing process needed for build, test, procurement, installation; and leading the effort to ensure the individual teams develop these processes.  Teams include Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Process Engineering, Procurement, Quality, Assembly, Test, Field Service, and others as needed.
  • Implements NPI procedural documents, supporting templates and forms, and SharePoint website to assist the NPD process with ensuring an orderly handoff of NPD design to Operations.
  • Releases required documentation for orderly completion of PACE phase 4 and 5, including 3D Modeling of SOE (Sequence of Events), visual process build flowcharts and supplying NPI project gap analysis.
  • Requires skills pertinent to assisting NPD Engineers teams with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) focus during design reviews, particularly with DFMEA’s.
  • Develops and implements efficient material handling, flow strategies and maintain safe and manufacturing processes at all times.
  • Monitor status of all new products and ensure effective execution of projects according to required policies, procedures and government regulations.
  • Researching improvements in the industry to identify better assembly solutions to continuously improve designs.
  • Lead in the creation of DFM knowledge capture KB’s.
  • Provides ownership and leadership for NPD PFMECA’s.
  • Ensures development of necessary procurement specifications and plans.
  • Leads and documents the prototype and preproduction builds of new product.
  • Ensures adequate build and FAT equipment, fixtures, material, and process documentation exists for first product builds via the development of a detailed Manufacturing BOM.
  • Release supporting documentation to support Service Team and product familiarization training to ensure orderly product field installation.
  • Requires multi-tasking of several projects simultaneously across a broad range of disciplines to ensure timely, effective, and within budget completion of assigned projects.
  • May require customer and supplier communications.
  • Attend trade shows and general corporate functions associated with role as a New Product Introduction Engineer.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Manager of New Product Development.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Welding, Metallurgical, Materials Science Mechanical, Chemical, or Industrial Engineering with relevant experience
  • Minimum five years’ experience as a welding engineer in a technology or manufacturing environment.
  • ASME IX, API and NORSOK M 601 experience is desired.

 

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Relevant experience performing metal joining engineering or similar chem-met processing.
  • Metal joining experience on stainless steels, titanium, HSLA, Hastelloy, and Inconel is desired.
  • Working knowledge of high precision devices and/or pressure vessels using laser, gas tungsten (GTAW), arc, resistance upset, brazing, and/or electron beam welding (EBM).
  • Computer skills with demonstrated ability to quickly learn and interact with, create, and edit complex engineering and process equipment software.
  • Six Sigma or Lean certification(s) is desired.
  • Experience with fixture design, process routings, and / or new equipment installation & startup
  • Demonstrated project management, continuous improvement, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Identifies and proposes technical improvements
  • Ability to analyze routine to moderately complex engineering designs and specifications to achieve efficient and reliable manufacturing or acceptance processes
