Position Summary and Responsibilities

Position Purpose

Uses analytical methods and finite element analysis to model thermal, structural and vibration behavior of engineering systems.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides complex analysis using high fidelity finite element analysis codes such as ABAQUS and ANSYS to model thermal and structural characteristics of materials, components and assemblies
  • Predicts thermal, mechanical and structural behavior of materials, structures and assemblies used in visible and infrared detector systems and camera systems
  • Conducts analytical and modeling studies of multi-scale and multi-physics problems
  • Conducts research and engineering analysis involving characterization of materials (metals, ceramics, composites, etc.) for imaging systems at cryogenic temperatures
  • Applies extensive technical expertise on a wide range of technical principles, theories and concepts from disciplines associated with thermal management, mechanical and fluid sciences
  • Performs Steady State and Transient Thermal Analysis using ANSYS
  • Performs bolted joint analysis problems by hand or with ANSYS
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge in the use of MathCAD, MatLab or Mathematica, Solidworks or other MCAD experience a plus
  • Knowledge of FPA materials properties
  • Understanding and skills using multiple types of analysis (thermal, fluid, transient flow)
  • Experience in thermal analysis of optical systems, including windows, mirror assemblies, telescopes and electro-optical sensors
  • Skills in performing thermal analysis of circuit card assemblies
  • Conducts insightful analysis to perform pre-test predictions and model subsequent test results
  • Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignments
  • Determines and develops creative approaches or solutions to complex problems
  • Represents organization as the key thermal/structural analyst and technical point of contact
  • Excellent written and suitable oral communication skills in English in order to lead the preparation of of presentations and reports describing research findings
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to relate well with colleagues and to share knowledge and expertise
  • Abilty to work energetically both independently and in a team environment
  • Advanced computer proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel & PowerPoint)
  • Displays exemplary ethics and business conduct and performs work cognizant of safe work practices

 

Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related field with a focus on structural and thermal modeling/analysis
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of industry experience in computational modeling in mechanical systems, structural, thermal-mechanical and transient analysis of complex systems
  • Experience in supporting proposal activities
