Position Summary and Responsibilities

The Communications Engineer is an expert on data communication systems. He/she will keep current with applicable technology, investigate and evaluate various data communications methods that promise to meet the needs of our product lines. He/she will assist the product line teams to develop communications project proposals that fit the data communication technologies with the needs of our customers.

 

Results Expected:

  1. Develop and maintain expertise in data communications technology, cellular, Wifi, LoRa, ZigBee, SigFox, GPS, satellite, Mesh Networks, etc, with emphasis on those technologies that have potential use with Teledyne Isco product lines. 
  2. As our internal expert in the data communications area, provide advice to Product line management teams, sales and marketing personnel, other engineers, and senior management.
  3. Test and evaluate data communications solutions for our customers performing hands on evaluation, and design.
  4. Assist Product Line teams with the development of project proposals, providing expertise on communications issues. Needed assistance would include assessments of the technical risk and feasibility of different approaches or solutions, and estimates of the development, product, and ongoing costs.
  5. Assist Product Development teams with the development of communications based products and systems. This includes hands on development and project leadership roles.
  6. Assist the Special Products Applications (SPA) group as needed, providing technical advise and assistance on communications needs.
  7. Travel as required for product testing, vendor/customer visits, investigation and evaluation of technologies, and attending trade shows, etc.
  8. Basic understanding of RF propagation and propagation techniques.
  9. Assist in meeting the goals of Teledyne Isco by performing other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

 

  1. Requires a technical degree from a four-year college or university with an emphasis on electronic data communications.
  2. Technical knowledge of data communications and knowledge of data communications services marketed by common carriers is a must.
  3. Must have 3 -5 years worth of telecommunications experience and expertise in data communications with working knowledge of cellular, satellite, radio, and landline data movement, storage, and retrieval. 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  1. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.      
  2. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and product manuals.
  3. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Verbal communications skills include the ability to clearly and concisely speak in front of the customers and groups of people and to explain technical issues to with senior management, PLT, PDT, and Manufacturing.

TRAVEL DEMAND:

On the average this individual will be required to travel once per month. Travel will include domestic and international travel and therefore a passport is necessary.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of an office environment. Occasionally the individual may have to observe and/or assist personnel in a technical repair or electronic manufacturing environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
