Position Summary and Responsibilities

Teledyne Brown is seeking an experienced, talented Senior Chemical Engineer to join our team in designing, developing, assembling and testing a wind tunnel laboratory on Redstone Arsenal. This individual will work in a multi-disciplinary environment to successfully support the program's Modeling and Simulation (M&S) needs throughout its life cycle.

Primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Performing analysis and M&S of the wind tunnel facility for the tasks that involve chemistry
  • Providing guidance on acquisition of needed and modification of the existing software technologies necessary to adequately execute M&S tasks that involve chemistry
  • Providing advice and guidance on and performing validation and verification of M&S technologies
  • Participating in the program’s overall M&S effort in support of system concept development, design, integration, failure mode analysis, test, and validation.
  • Ensuring the technical adequacy and rigor of M&S efforts involving wind tunnel chemistry
  • Reviewing, interpreting and presenting results of M&S analyses involving wind tunnel chemistry
  • Developing and implementing applicable workflows, tools, and methods for M&S effort involving chemistry
  • Collaborating with M&S staff across the program

It would be highly desirable to have proficiency in the following areas:

  • Strong analytical skills and background in chemical kinetics, thermodynamics, combustion, surface catalysis and reaction engineering
  • Working knowledge of nitrous oxide for use in industrial systems and applications
  • Proficient with one of the commercial chemistry modeling software packages and methods: Loci-CHEM, Modelica, Cantera
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC) resources
  • Proficient with at least one scripting language (e.g., Perl, PowerShell, bash, etc.)
  • Proficient with at least one general-purpose scientific computing language/environment (e.g., FORTRAN, Python, MATLAB, etc)
  • Familiarity with laboratory and experimental procedures, data interpretation and technical decisions that are applied in an innovative environment (National Laboratories, industrial laboratories) towards successful design of a state-of-the-art facility
  • Experience should include having led a team of engineers and research scientists. Demonstration of having been a part of the conceptualization process through low fidelity modeling and onto a fieldable and high TRL system and/or component.
  • Familiarity with issue associated with modeling of decomposition and combustion phenomena
  • Familiarity with issue associated with modeling of thermal protection system, including pyrolysis and ablation
  • Familiarity with issue associated with modeling of multiphysical and/or multidisciplinary problem sets


Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university in Chemical Engineering, Physical Chemistry, Materials Technology or a related degree and a minimum of 15 years of directly related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. M.S. or Ph.D. with coursework and/or research placing a heavy emphasis on M&S, highly desirable.
