    Position Summary and Responsibilities

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Directs activities of the quality inspection team, ensuring that personnel work accurately and effectively to produce quality products or services. The Manager is a Leader and must act with professionalism, encouraging employees to follow established methods and procedures of the quality control system to keep the production of products flowing at a consistent pace.

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:

    • Maintains timekeeping activities for inspection personnel.
    • Selects and assigns quality control duties to the staff and evaluates the performance of assigned employees in their assigned roles.
    • Coordinates with Document Control to ensure that drawings are properly formatted per ANSI Geometrical Dimensioning requirements. Is involved in the approval process of drawings, Bills of Materials (BOM’s), and inspection procedures.
    • Arranges training as related to improving quality control measures and ensures that labor relations requirements are met.
    • Where required, maintains records and reports and issues correspondence.
    • Reviews errors and their causes and provides advice to correct such errors.
    • Coordinates with suppliers when necessary to ensure effective corrective / preventive actions.
    • Provides oversight and ensures that item(s) are properly received within the company’s software tracking system.
    • Maintains production efficiency levels by ensuring that products are quickly and accurately inspected.
    • Ensures that appropriate inspection methods and equipment is available to inspection staff. Participates in the process of quoting and selection of inspection gages and equipment, and in establishing appropriate maintenance agreements for tools and equipment.
    • Provides oversight in ensuring proper product identification, and review of certifications of compliance for proper formatting and adherence to industry standards.
    • Determines the most efficient inspection methods and guides personnel in their selection and use.
    • Provides oversight in ensuring that inspection tools and equipment is properly maintained and calibrated.
    • Provides oversight in ensuring that statistically valid and appropriate sampling plans are utilized in defining sampling sizes and AQL’s to preclude / minimize defect escapes to production.
    • Is involved in the disposition process for nonconforming materials and processes.
    • Understands production processes as they relate to inspection, and uses good judgement and discretion in determining acceptable standards of product workmanship and compliance.
    • Provides oversight to ensure that products meet outline drawing dimensional and configuration requirements. Provides guidance in the completion of first article inspections when a requirement.

    Qualifications

    • Education: High School or general education (GED). ASQC Precision Mechanical Inspection Certificate is highly desirable. Must be highly skilled and adept at interpreting Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GDT) requirements and how GDT is applied to precision mechanical inspection requirements. Experience with electrical components and assemblies, printed circuit board assemblies and surface mount technology, testing and handling is highly desirable. Experience with reading PCB blue prints, schematics, and with JSTD soldering and manufacturing assembly processing is highly desirable. An understanding of industry standards and regulations as they apply to counterfeit avoidance, and Foreign Object Debris (FOD) prevention is necessary.
    • Experience: Five years of experience using precision mechanical inspection equipment for inspection of parts with tight tolerances. Higher level mathematics required. Determines dimensions not specified in drawings by applying knowledge of algebra, trigonometry and geometry. Fluent in drawing interpretation using GD&T and ANSI. Understands thread types and inspection methods. Familiar with plating and anodizing requirements. Knowledgeable of various metals compositions and characteristics. Three years minimum of Supervisory or Management experience required.
    • Specific vision abilities required: include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus and differentiate when variances are perceived.
    • Equipment used: Must have advanced precision mechanical Inspection experience utilizing various inspection tools, fixtures and equipment such as: micrometers, Vernier’s calipers, laser micrometers, dial indicators, comparators, pin gages, micro-height indicators, air gages, etc.
    • Competency in the operation of the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), including programming experience is highly desirable.
    • Must be able to locate reference points on parts and measures dimensions such as angles, arcs and radii using combinations of inspection aides such as blocks, V Blocks, sine bars and other precision measuring instruments.
    • Must be able to check surface finishes with the use of comparison gages or by using a profilometer to establish compliance to standards or specification requirements.
    • Skilled or adaptable in the use of automated optical inspection equipment.
    • Familiar with ISO 9001 Quality Management System Requirements as relative to “release of products and services”. Is supportive to the companies audit program in maintaining compliance of the product assurance functions.
    • An effective quality control manager is capable of interpreting laws and regulations, implementing precise policies and performing investigative duties when necessary.
