    Position Summary and Responsibilities

    Teledyne Scientific Company (TSC) has an immediate opening for an entry-level Member of Technical Staff – Research Engineer position in the Optics group. The group specializes in developing, prototyping, and demonstrating cutting edge optical technologies for imaging, sensing, and agile beam control. The position requires software and firmware development for intelligent optical systems. The position is primarily located at TSC’s Thousand Oaks, CA facility. Some domestic travel may be needed.


    Essential duties:

    • Develop, and deliver novel solutions to a broad range of problems including applications in target detection, classification and tracking, machine learning, computer vision, sensing, signal analysis, and autonomous systems
    • Develop software and firmware to control and integrate optical, electro-optic, and opto-mechanical devices and systems
    • Implement advanced algorithms on PC, GPU, and SoC (System on a Chip) platforms.
    • Simulate underlying physics using common computer software and simulation tools and predict performance at device or system level
    • Other duties as assigned


    Desired skills, experience, and qualities:

    • Experience with common programming languages with interest in hands on (embedded) firmware
    • Familiarity with software development practices (version control/compiler skills/ debugging, etc.), under Windows/Linux/Unix, is required
    • Experience with building and integrating components for unmanned vehicles, robotics, and/or autonomous systems is desired
    • Low-level programming, circuit design, and prototyping experience is desired
    • Experiences with specific computational domains, such as machine learning, image processing, signal processing, and controls, is a plus
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment
    • Excellent technical judgment, data analysis, and interpretation skills
    • Passion for new technology development and creative thinking



    Must have a MS degree in Engineering, Computer Science or Applied Physics; or BS degree with 3+ years of work experience in a related field.
